Emeritus Professor Ben Selinger AM [Deputy Warden Burton Hall 1965 -1966]
This record comes from a diary I kept for the time I was in Burton Hall. Because it contained much personal detail, it has been destroyed. Some excerpts are in the accompanying files with ANU Archives. Some of these excerpts have been lost by […]
I was at Burton from 1967 to 1970.
I am attaching a copy of the Union Art Exhibition 1968 for the Union art exhibition ( I think it was the first one although not certain)
Des freeman was a contributor and the art Exhibition director. He was at that time a member of Burton.
A FEW MEMORIES OF GARRAN HALL I lived in Garran Hall during 1966 and 1967 when I was completing 2nd and 3rd year of my Science degree. As Garran had only opened in 1966 I was among the first students to live there and everything was new.
There was little if any landscaping around the […]
Do you know who write this for Woroni?
When men look back on their lives, they don’t remember the drudgery of everyday existence of the boredom of the class room and workshop. Rather a series of Momentous Events stands out and as they reminisce it is these Bright Spots that causes them to exclaim: ‘That was a great year.’

WINE TO AID THE PALETTE
Lady Huxley, wife of the former Vice-Chancellor of the ANU, admires the medium in which ‘A View from a Kitchen Window 1968′ was executed.
Sixteen flagons of wine were provided for the well attended opening of the ANU Art Group’s exhibition, ‘Wattle Street’, at the Menzies Library last night.
“The Burton Hall-Garran Hall art exhibition opened last night at the Australian National University with more than 70 exhibits. Here Miss Joan Morshead, Miss Diana Giese and Miss Alison Seagrim discuss one of the paintings, San Francisco 1967, with the artist, Mr Des Freeman.”

I was probably one of the first Garran residents in 1966. I moved into a tutor’s room there when Garran was completed as someone to keep an eye on the newly completed building pending normal student use the following year. Quite an experience to have a whole floor to oneself!
