The trip to Goulburn story occurred after Commencement dinner in 1985. After the dinner a reasonable sized group of us continued at the Private Bin. I’d like to say this place was not as bad as it sounded, however it was worse. It closed in the 90s after there were numerous fights outside it each night, the Police were regularly in attendance and the fighting usually spread across Northbourne Ave. In the 80s however it was only a grimy, sleazy cess pit of a place.
The hall bus was used to ferry some extraordinarily drunk people back to the hall afterwards for safety measures, and Paul Hanratty and myself being the last couple of non drunks drove the bus and organised people onto the bus. We must have left with the last contingent about 4am. One of them wanted a hamburger and being the last busload we obliged. All the food vans in Civic were shut, and someone suggested McDonalds in Dickson which was duly tried and found to be closed.
The next suggestion was the 24hour McDonalds on the highway in Goulburn. At the time the highway ran through Goulburn, there were no bypasses and the old highway crept around Lake George. After quite some debate, the majority won and we set of for the hour long trip to Goulburn McDonalds.
Despite the open 24 hours sign on the McDonalds entry that also was closed, but the Big Merino was open and as the sun was coming up so breakfast was obtained there. The photos were from there, and were never revealed. Given any consequences will have expired I feel sure that they can be released, but one part of the story can’t be revealed.
All our passengers fell asleep on the return journey as you can see, and we arrived home just in time for the sports team to climb into the bus and head off for their game, at least it was warm for them.
The picture of Lisa any myself was from a Heroes and Villains Valete dinner in 1985.
