For some reason following November 1975 the Campus became very political. At the Black Mountain end of the main dining room (Garran) there was a long room where private dinners could be held and often VIPs & guests were entertained there. I was lucky enough to be invited to High Table three times and the dinner with former PM Gough Whitlam on April 8th 1976 was memorable – though kept quiet following a near riot at neighbouring Bruce Hall when Governor-General Kerr attended a dinner there.
Just registered for B&G 50th.
Will be posting slides from 1965, 66 & 67 soon.
Looking forward to reunion next January 2015
We regret that we cannot attend the reunion in January 20015 as we will be overseas.
Paul Riggs and Angela Riggs (formerly Angela Brock) .
Colin if you still have this type of paperwork your storage must be larger than the old B and G rooms.
100 people have responded as interested in the reunion so far.
2009 was myself
2010 was Jack Taylor (i think)
Is there anyone around who was in Garren Hall in 1967 – I was there just for one year. But loved the place.
Add to staff list:
Dr Mike Gore, Warden Garran Hall, 1975-78
Professor Philip H Clarke LLB (now Deakin Uni) acting warden Garran 1976
http://communities.deakin.edu.au/deakin-speaking/user/11
Pat Sorby should be listed as a deputy warden at Garran… I don’t know the full duration.
Dr Tony Cutten was also a deputy warden in 1976.

I was deputy chair of the Garran Hall Members Union which replaced the JCR in 1976. If memory serves correctly, Lachlan McGregor was chair for 1976
I’d be interested in the 1967 photos
Martha Rutledge was a subwarden in Burton Hall in 1965, and later the women’s deputy warden. She died on April 27, 2014 at the age of 77.
Feel free to post in the forum http://burtongarran50th.org/forums/forum/discussions-3/
John Caiger was the other Deputy Warden of Garran Hall in 1967 and probably the year earlier as well. There were two Deputy Wardens: John Caiger and Pat Sorby.
Thanks, I have updated this.
There was a position of “Porter” in early days (around 1968-1975), filled by the amiable Eric James. He acted as resident night-watchman and also the first Bar Manager when the Buttery opened in Central Block.
Around the same time Eric Walsh was the Business Manager of Burton Hall.
The late Gordon Walsh was Business manager of both Burton and Garran Halls from 1966.
In those days he was a left wing labor party member who won preselection against the popular sitting member Jim Fraser over the issue of the Vietnam war. There was a big dispute, and the preselection was later overturned. Gordon Walsh later studied for an ANU degree, and towards the end of his life he became a supporter of Pauline Hanson.
From my memory Bill Krebs’ title was Warden, not Head, and he was Dr. at the time. I believe that the Head of the hall during Bill’s time was John Hudson.
It sounds like a fun weekend and a great excuse to revisit Canberra. I was at Burton from 1976 to 1979 and had a memorable time!
Sounds like a full weekend. Please do have the Service at John XXIII Chapel as well as the more secular events!
The ‘Bad Taste’ ball was definitely not in the 70s. As with so many things from my Uni days I’m a bit hazy on the exact year, but I think it was 1981. I designed the tickets and probably have one somewhere in one of those boxes that you hide away.
Hi Ian,
Stumbled upon this by pure chance. Had lost contact with everyone from Garran pioneers 1966. Left early 1967 when my father was diagnosed with cancer then passed away in July. Returned 1968/1969 and only been back again August 30 this year ANU Open Day with my youngest daughter(15). Great memories recalled visiting rooms and totally revamped self-catering Dining/Rec facilities.
Dislocated my thumb in first tackle of that footy game but most importantly helped salvage team pride by scoring our only try from an intercept. Always pissed that Woroni described it as ‘dark horse try in closing stages’. At least the girls in Garran were impressed and helped me for next couple of weeks while thumb was in a splint.
Cheers, Bob Grocott

In the photo of the Burton Hall rugby league team walking off the field, Professor Herbert (Joe) Burton is the grey haired gentleman wearing a coat at the left.
Burton Hall was named after him, and in 1967 he was the same age as I am now!
